Drawing Lesson - Wassily Kandinsky

Image
Description This art project was inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. He was an abstract artist who could hear hums and sounds within colors. Ms. Schumacher and I taught this drawing lesson to our class. We first taught them about Kandinsky, his life, and his artwork. Then we got to be artists! The first thing we did was draw three geometric and three organic shapes. Then we had to draw one line from one end of the paper to the other. After that was done, we drew two patterns using oil pastels, one in a geometric shape, and one in an organic shape. Once the whole class had drawn these items, it was time to paint. During the presentation earlier, we discussed how Kandinsky heard music in colors. As the students were painting, we played a Disney mashup for them to listen to. They had to listen to the music and paint with the color they felt while hearing that certain snippet of music. This allowed them to be creative and use several different colors, shapes, and patterns. Just like ...

Hidden Safari

Image
Description When first glancing at this art project it can look very confusing and messy. This project would be great to get children excited about art! First, you draw a safari animal with a blue colored pencil. We drew our animals upside down, which made it easier. Once your animal is drawn, you cover the page in patterns with warm colors. It was very important to not press too hard while drawing your animal, that way the patterns and warm colors could hide it. The only way to see the animal now is through special red glasses that we made before drawing.  Extension Activity An extension activity for this can relate to Social Studies. Each student will get to pick an important person in history that we have learned about and draw them in blue colored pencil. Then, they will give 3 clues about their person and exchange with classmates. They will try to guess their classmates drawing by observing it and reading the clues!

Vincent Van Gogh's Project

Image
Description This art project was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night.' We learned about Vincent Van Gogh's life and art works throughout his career. We wrote down three things that we learned before we started our project. Then, we got to create a project that used his techniques! We all grabbed a piece of construction paper and covered it with tissue paper. Everyone got to choose the color scheme they wanted to use. After that step was complete, we used oil pastels to create "moving" lines throughout the piece of paper. Next, you chose your landscape. I made a shape that is similar to the one in the original 'Starry Night.' Then, I added hills and trees. I wanted mine to look like you were in an environment where you would hike!  Extension Activity An extension activity that students could do is creating their own story that describes their picture. Each student created their own environment that they imagined. They can write a paper or tel...
